△ 보령 외연도 상록수림(천연기념물 제136호)

 

-외연도의 상록수림은 마을 뒷쪽 능선을 따라 형성되어 있다. 상록수림을 구성하고 있는 식물들로는 후박나무·동백나무·식나무·보리밥나무·먼나무·무른나무·돈나무·자금우·붉가시나무·송악·마삭줄·방기나무 등의 상록활엽수와 팽나무·찰피나무·딱총나무·푸조나무·자귀나무·산초나무·누리장나무·고로쇠나무·구지뽕나무·산뽕나무·닥나무·꾸지나무·찔레·참빗살·두릅나무·붉나무·초피나무·상수리나무·예덕나무·민머귀나무·가마귀밥여름나무·황칠나무·회나무·실거리나무·자작나무·때죽나무·개산초나무·광대싸리·병아리꽃나무·화살나무·새비나무·털갈매·쥐똥나무 등의 낙엽활엽수, 담쟁이덩굴·국화으아리·사위질빵·계요등·칡·왕머루·청미래덩굴·노박덩굴·댕댕이덩굴·새머루 등의 상록덩굴식물 보춘화·전호·노란장대 등의 풀 종류가 자라고 있다.

이곳의 동백나무는 수백년 전에 섬사람들이 남쪽으로 왕래할 때 옮겨 심은 것이라고도 하며, 중국 제(齊)나라 장군으로 한(漢)나라에 쫓겨 병사들을 이끌고 이곳에 피신해 있다가 항복을 강요받자 병사들과 섬사람들의 안전을 위하여 홀로 중국으로 건너가 자결하였다는 전횡장군이 심은 것이라고도 한다.
