 △ 송광사 곱향나무쌍향수 (천연기념물 88호)

 

-나무의 크기는 높이가 12.0m, 가슴높이의 둘레가 4.10m, 3.30m이다. 천자암 뒷뜰의 성산각 옆에서 자란다.

향나무에 얽힌 전설에 의하면 조계산에 천자암을 짓고 수도하시던 보조국사와 담당국사가 중국 갔다 오실 때 짚고 오신 지팡이를 나란히 꽂아 놓은 것이 뿌리가 내려 자랐다고 한다. 담당국사는 왕자의 몸으로서 보조국사의 제자가 되신 분이다. 그 두 그루의 향나무가 서 있는 모습이 스승과 제자가 서로 절을 하고 있는 모습과 같다고 보는 이도 있어 사제지간에 얽힌 800년전의 옛모습을 그대로 보여주는 것만 같다.

이 나무는 엿가락을 비꼬은 것 같이 꼬여있고 한손으로 밀거나 여러사람이 여러손으로 밀거나 한결같이 움직이는 것이 신기하며 한 번씩 손을 대어 흔들어 보면 틀림없이 극락세계로 갈 수 있다는 전설이 있어 천자암을 찾는 손님이 많다고 한다.
