△ 무안 청천리 팽나무와 개서어나무 숲 (천연기념물 제82호)

 

-줄나무는 길가나 도로변에 줄처럼 길게 심어져 가로수 역할을 하는 나무들을 말하는데, 우리 선조들은 마을 입구나 농토 주변에 나무를 심거나 숲을 만들어 바람과 태풍으로부터 마을과 농작물을 보호하고 쉼터로도 이용하여 왔다.

무안 청천리의 팽나무 및 개서어나무의 줄나무는 마을 앞 국도변을 따라 심어져 있으며, 팽나무 66그루, 개서어나무 20그루, 느티나무 3그루로 구성되어 있다. 이들 나무의 나이는 대략 500살 쯤으로 추정되고 있다. 이곳 줄나무는 약 500년 전 이곳에 정착한 배씨의 선조가 마을의 지형을 살피고는 마을 앞이 허전하다고 판단하여 심어 놓은 것이라 전해지며, 나무를 꺽거나 열매를 따먹으면 큰병에 걸린다고 했기 때문에 그동안 잘 보호되어 온 것으로 생각된다.

우리나라에서 천연기념물로 지정된 줄나무는 함평 대동면의 줄나무와 무안 청천리의 팽나무와 개서어나무의 줄나무 밖에 없다. 특히 이곳의 줄나무는 서쪽바다에서 불어오는 강한 바람으로부터 마을을 보호하는 방풍림의 기능도 하고 있어 매우 중요하다.
